We Raise Grass-fed Galloway Beef
Galloway Beef Breed
Our herd consists of a mixture of black and belted Galloways, with some crosses to black angus. The Galloway originates in Scotland and is one of the world's longest established breeds. They have a double-layered coat, being wavy or curly, that allows them to withstand our harsh winters. The Galloway breed is known for their high quality of meat which is finely marbled and juicy, but extremely lean. Galloway's have been bred to finish on grass which makes them an ideal fit for our farm.
What is Grass-fed
Our cattle are never fed grain and have access to pasture their entire lives. During the growing season, the herd is moved regularly through our pastures and always have access to fresh pasture. In the winter they are fed bales of forage placed at intervals of about 60 feet throughout the pastures. Feeding this way is much healthier for the herd and the pastures since they are not kept in confinement and their manure is spread across our pastures instead of building up and having to be moved. Our cattle always have access to shelter and fresh water, although they tend to ignore the shelter and prefer to eat snow.
The Health Benefits of Grass-fed Beef
Meat from pastured animals is ideal for your health. First of all, grass-fed meat tends to be much lower in total fat than grain fed products and, compared with commercial products, they offer you more "good" fats and fewer "bad" fats. Furthermore, they do not contain traces of added hormones or unneeded antibiotics. We are a member of the Manitoba Grass-fed Beef Association. Cooking Tips
Because grass-fed beef is leaner, it should be cooked with lower temperatures and quicker times to preserve its tenderness and flavor.
