Frequently Asked Questions

Are you certified organic?

We are not "certified" organic, but we do practice organic and sustainable farming methods. We have chosen at this time not to incur the additional expense of "certification," and instead be open and transparent about the way we produce food. This is why we welcome your questions and offer tours of the farm.

Do you use antibiotics/vaccinations?

We strictly abide by the Manitoba Grass Fed Beef Association regulations which does not allow for any animal that has been given antibiotics after weaning to be sold under its brand.  We do vaccinate our young stock for black leg, which is a soil borne disease prevalent in our Interlake soils.  Black leg produces an acute local infection, and the resulting blood poisoning leads to rapid death.  All animals are slaughtered well after the withdrawal period for this vaccine.

Do you use conventional fertilizers or pesticides?

We do not use conventional fertilizers at all.  All soil nutrient modification is done by organic and sustainable means.  We don’t like using pesticides and only use them when we risk a strawberry crop failure due to a large population of tarnished plant bug nymphs.  To manage this issue we need to spray an insecticide on the strawberries during the flowering stage (before berries are present).  If we have to spray, we use the safest and environmentally sound spray available and harvest does not happen until well after the recommended time frame.

Can we visit your farm?

Yes, absolutely. Please contact us first to schedule a visit.
